Saving electricity

Some of our devices can consume a lot of power even when switched off

It is important to by only low-energy appliances and to switch them off completely when they are not in use. Even in standby mode, an device consumes electricity. With switchable sockets and power strips, several devices can be switched off at the touch of a button.

Chargers also consume power when no mobile phone or tablet is connected. Devices should not be charged longer than necessary and the chargers should then be disconnected, this saves electricity.

In the kitchen, I can reduce the refrigerator’s consumption by regularly defrosting the fridge grille on the back of the appliance and the freezer. Shorter dishwasher cycles will also be more economical. A lid on the pan or saucepan reduces preheating and cooking time. The kettle uses less energy to bring the water to a boil.

Washing at 30°, with short cycles and natural drying reduces consumption.

Is my comfort always justified in relation to its environmental impact?

To go further:
  • Decreasing the heating by 1 or 2 degrees in my apartment impacts directly my bill.
  • Encouraging my entire building to do the same really reduces the local ecological footprint.
  • Generalizing a limitation on heating in homes would limit our overall CO2 emissions.
